Beyond Status: What’s Driving Luxury Consumers Across APAC

Luxury has long been associated with exclusivity, status, and aspiration. But across APAC, what consumers consider a luxury and what motivates them to spend are becoming more personal.

To understand how these behaviors are evolving, Ogury surveyed 7,466 consumers across Australia, Japan, and Singapore as part of our latest research, Luxury Reimagined: Understanding the New Permission Economy Across APAC.

What Luxury Means Across APAC

Luxury is no longer defined by premium products or status alone. For many consumers, it increasingly represents time, experiences, personal reward, or the feeling of having earned something special.

In Australia, for example, 34% of consumers cite celebration as a reason to indulge, suggesting that the motivation behind a purchase can be just as important as the product itself.

These findings raise an important question for brands: are they speaking to what consumers want to buy, or what makes those purchases meaningful?

Four Luxury Mindsets, Three Different Markets

Our research identified four distinct luxury mindsets across APAC, shaped not simply by age or income, but by the values influencing how consumers choose to spend.

However, the balance between those mindsets varies considerably across Australia, Japan, and Singapore. These distinctions influence more than what consumers buy. They can also shape which messages resonate and the moments when they may be most receptive.

Traditional demographic segmentation can tell marketers who an audience is, but understanding motivation helps explain why they may choose to act. The same product or campaign can mean very different things depending on the reasons behind a purchase.

From Luxury Insights to Audience Strategy

For marketers, the opportunity is to use these insights to build more relevant audience strategies, develop messaging that reflects what consumers value, and identify the moments most likely to influence premium purchase decisions.

That means looking beyond who has the ability to spend and focusing on what makes a purchase feel worthwhile. Doing so can help brands engage consumers in ways that are more closely aligned with the motivations behind their decisions.
